ANS 278 Genetic Improvement: Livestock

Introduces basic, practical concepts of improving livestock through a variety of genetic programs, including genetic possibilities, utilizing heritability for production gains, inbreeding coefficient, mating systems, genetic predictors and improvement programs.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
Understand the molecular concepts behind inheritance. Understand how management can infuence traits expression through inbreeding, outbreeding and linebreeding. Understand the benefits prepotency and drawbacks inbreeding depression associated with inbreeding. Understand the difference of inheritance in monogenic, polygenic, simply inherited and qualitative traits. Calculate repeatabilty, and apply these oncepts to a practocal situation. Develop inheritane probabilities with a potential sire and dam. Utilize the proper mating systems to express a trait of interest. Understand evolution, and apply it to daily management principles.
