GS 105 Physical Science: Principles of Chemistry
An introductory level laboratory science course offering a non-quantitative and descriptive survey of chemical principles relevant to everyday life. Topics presented in this course include applications of chemistry to environmental issues such as nuclear energy, recycling, air and water pollution, and energy resources. Students may select a theme that interest them the most, but the course may be used only once to meet graduation requirements. May not be taken for credit if six or more hours of college level chemistry have been completed.

Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
Describe key events in the history of science, with particular emphasis on chemistry, and their impact on society. Describe and apply the process of scientific inquiry. Formulate and explain conclusions regarding collected laboratory data. Solve scientific problems with quantitative methods using dimensional analysis. Analyze the Periodic Table to explain atomic structure, chemical bonding, nomenclature, and properties of matter. Research an environmental chemistry issue concerning society today, form an opinion and be able to defend that position.
