G 101 Intro to Geology: Solid Earth

Introduces geology and the processes that shape the landscape. Includes a study of rocks and minerals, volcanic activity, plate tectonics, earthquake activity, and earthäó»s geologic resources. Field trips highlight topics discussed. Includes a laboratory component. Geology courses do not need to be taken in sequence.

Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
Describe key events in the history of science, with particular emphasis on geology, and their impact on society. Describe and apply the process of scientific inquiry. Solve scientific problems with quantitative methods. Classify and identify key Earth materials. Distinguish between the various types of processes that occur on and beneath the surface of Earth, in the context of plate tectonics.
