NUR 201B Advanced Medical-Surgical Practice
NUR 201B is the fourth course in the lab series. Clinical application of both theory and skills occurs in the lab, hospital, mental health, rehab, and community care settings. Students continue to identify patient problems/nursing diagnosis, plan, and implement basic nursing care. Students demonstrate nursing skills, clinical judgment, priority management and strategic intervention in the laboratory clinical application portion of the course.

Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
Manage and direct care addressing priority patient problems; implement culturally competent care at a beginning level. Integrate pathophysiological and behavioral science concepts and provide rationale for nursing care for chronic illness; implement appropriate nursing actions safely and effectively to meet patient and family needs. Engage in repeated and ongoing assessment of the patient in order to recognize normal findings and identify findings which are abnormal and changes in the patient condition across the lifespan. Integrate use of technology into physical assessment. Engage in professional communication with peers and colleagues; intentionally exercise therapeutic communication with patients and families using verbal, written, and information tools/devices; use reflective practice to identify learning needs and improve nursing care. Integrate and follows established protocols to reinforce basic health promotion and self-care education to patients in the acute, geriatric and/or mental health setting. Practice within the legal and ethical parameters of the nursing profession focusing on death, dying and caregiver issues; function as an assisted nursing student. Apply and begin to evaluate evidence-based nursing interventions to improve patient outcomes; implements logic and problem-solving skills when evaluating the nursing process.
