NUR 201B Advanced Medical-Surgical Practice

The fourth course in the lab series. Focuses on clinical application of both theory and skills in the lab, hospital, mental health, rehab, and community care settings. Builds on the identification of patient problems/nursing diagnosis, planning, and implementation of basic nursing care. Students demonstrate nursing skills, clinical judgment, priority management and strategic intervention in the laboratory clinical application portion of the course.

Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
Management of Care: Manage and direct care for two acute care clients addressing priority problems; practice within the legal and ethical parameters of the nursing profession. Safety and Infection Control: Implement appropriate nursing actions safely and effectively to meet client and family needs. Health Promotion and Maintenance: Integrate and follow established protocols to reinforce basic health promotion and self-care education to clients and families. Psychosocial Integrity: Implement culturally competent care and integrate psychosocial nursing diagnoses into the nursing care plan. Basic Care and Comfort: Demonstrate basic care and comfort for all clients. Pharmacological and Parenteral Therapies:  Identify appropriate nursing responsibilities in the delivery of medications, blood products and/or infusions. Implement responsibilities appropriately with faculty supervision. Reduction of Risk Potential: Implement logic and problem-solving skills when evaluating the nursing process to improve client outcomes Physiological Adaptation: Continually assess clients in order to identify findings that are abnormal and changes in the client condition across the lifespan. Professional Engagement: Demonstrate professional communication with peers and colleagues; use reflective practice to identify learning needs and improve nursing care.
