NUR 103B Nursing Practice Throughout the Lifespan

The third course in the lab series. Focuses on clinical application of both theory and skills in the lab, hospital, mental health, rehab, and other community settings. Builds on the identification of patient problems/nursing diagnosis, planning, and implementation of basic nursing care as it applies throughout the lifespan. Specified nursing skills, along with developing critical thinking skills and managing care abilities are demonstrated in the laboratory clinical application portion of the course.

Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
Management of Care: Apply evidence-based research to plan care and develop a nursing care plan with three diagnoses of increasing complexity. Safety and Infection Control: Demonstrate safe client clinical decision-making/critical thinking in the simulated care and clinical settings. Health Promotion and Maintenance: Provide care and education for clients from birth through childbearing age in the simulated care and clinical perinatal settings. Psychosocial Integrity: Identify and support client coping strategies. Basic Care and Comfort: Implement measures such as comfort, education, basic care in preparation for client discharge or transfer. Pharmacological and Parenteral Therapies: Demonstrate safe and effective administration of IV fluids and IV medications in the simulated care setting and independently and safely administer oral medications in the clinical setting. Reduction of Risk Potential: Evaluate client responses to procedures and treatments, intervening as indicated. Physiological Adaptation: Manage the care of a client with fluid and electrolyte imbalance, alterations in airway, or alterations in hemodynamic status. Professional Engagement: Demonstrate improved time management in the care of two clients.
