Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
Student will understand the connections between past events and contemporary events. Students will learn that their own personal history is deeply connected to the history of Asian in important and often subtle ways. Students will learn about and write about the lessons which Asian civilizations can teach us and how to apply these lessons to our current civilizations challenges and the challenges of the 21st century. Students will learn that civilizations a recent and ongoing experiment which has created new relationships between humanity and nature which are highly problematic. Students will learn that our current civilization is the result of influences from Asia, and that through time, contacts between Europe and America the West and Asia have been important in shaping the culture of both regions. Students will be able to put current events in Asia in proper historical context, enabling them to participate in an global economy and society which requires a wide knowledge of historical ideas and events.
