PE 270 Sport Psychology
Introduces mental, physical, social and psychological aspects of athletic performance and the significance of sport as it relates to culture, socialization, character development, personality, race, gender, economics, and mass media.
Prerequisite
Required: Ability to read and write at the college level. Critical thinking skills and problem solving strongly desired.

Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
Design a personal sport philosophy. Document the predominant historical perspective of sport, the prevalent behavioral principles of sport, and the existing socialization aspects of sport. Outline primary motivations in sport. Discuss health issues of performance enhancing drugs. Debate gender equity and female participation in male dominated sports. Engage in a discussion of sportsmanship as it relate to culture. Research the extent of commercialization of sport at the various levels of participation. Discuss theories for the rise in violence in sport and subsequent penalties. Outline the importance of leadership in sports. Chart expectations for youth in sport and parental involvement in youth sport.
