CH 241 Organic Chemistry
The first course of a three-term sequence for students in the sciences, chemical engineering, and professional health programs. Topics include nomenclature, in-depth treatment of major classes of organic compounds, mechanisms and synthesis. Includes a laboratory component. May be eligible for upper-division credit at a four-year institution. For details, please see the program description for an Associate of Science with an emphasis in Chemistry.

Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
Work safely in a laboratory environment while observing and accurately recording measurements related to chemical phenomena. Apply organic chemical principles and theories as they relate to compound structure, acid/base conjugate pairs, alkanes, alkyl halides, and alcohols. Determine the chemical reaction type (neutralization, addition, substitution and elimination), illustrate its mechanisms, and determine the products.
