CH 221 General Chemistry

The first course in a three-course general chemistry series for students majoring in most sciences, pharmacy, professional health programs, and chemical engineering. Includes a laboratory component.

Prerequisite

Completion of high school chemistry with a grade of C or better and a passing score on the chemistry entrance exam; or CH 150 Preparatory Chemistry with a grade of C or better, or CH 121 College Chemistry with a grade of C or better or CH 112 Chemistry for Health Occupations with a grade of C or better; and MTH 095 Intermediate Algebra with a grade of C or better, or equivalent.

Outcomes

Solve scientific problems with quantitative methods and apply chemical principles associated with matter, unit conversions, and uncertainty. Outline the milestones in developing modern atomic theories. Interpret atomic structure, construct electron configurations, investigate periodic properties, and extrapolate periodic trends. Demonstrate how bonds exist within compounds using different chemical bonding theories. Solve scientific problems with dimensional analysis and apply chemical principles to chemical equations and stoichiometry. Perform general chemistry experiments, analyze recorded data, and evaluate the data while working safely in a laboratory environment.
