ST 111 Introduction to Surgical Theory
Introduces the hospital setting as it relates to the surgical technology field. Consists of professional management, the organization and management of healthcare facilities, the physical environment, disasters or public health emergencies, and communication tactics and techniques utilized in a catastrophe. Covers important components for cultivating a surgical conscience in addition to employable skills, operating room attire, hand hygiene and surgical scrub. Required: Admission to the Surgical Technology program.

BI 231 Human Anatomy & Physiology,
MTH 095 Intermediate Algebra and
WR 121Z Composition I all with a grade of C or better.
Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
Tour a surgical suite and identify the design type, traffic patterns, and direct support areas. Assess current trends and employment opportunities for the Surgical Technologist. Define the principles of aseptic technique and provide examples for the application of each as observed during a surgical setting and demonstrate critical thinking skills in the application of aseptic techniques. Define members of the surgical team and their roles. Understand and discuss All-Hazard preparation and planning, including detection and communication, incident management and support systems, safety and security, clinical/ public health assessment and intervention, contingency, continuity, and recovery as well as related public health laws and ethics.
