ST 114 Surgical Technology Theory IV

Introduces students to the technology and surgical equipment used in the operating room, along with the principles and applications for endoscopic, laser, electrosurgery, ultrasonic, robotic, and picture-guided surgery. Covers additional topics such as pharmacology and anesthesia for surgical technologists, post-anesthesia care, emergency patient procedures, and death and dying.

Lab-  Builds on the newly acquired cognitive, psychomotor, and affective surgical technologist skills in a real-world surgical lab setting. The use of aseptic and sterile method principles for secure patient care procedures is emphasized. Professional conduct is required and assessed.

Prerequisite

ST 113 Surgical Technology Theory III with a grade of C or better.

Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
Demonstrate an understanding of the different types of equipment used in the operating room including the safe use of electricity, energy, lasers, robotics, and the precautionary measures needed. Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of anesthesia administration. Demonstrate an understanding of the proper handling and labeling of medication in the operating room. Demonstrate an understanding of the immediate postoperative care of the surgical patient. Demonstrate an understanding of types of emergency procedures carried out in the operating room. Demonstrate an understanding of the beliefs, classifications, and attitudes regarding the death and dying of the surgical patient from the perspectives of the patient's family and the surgical team.
