ST 113 Surgical Technology Theory III
Focuses on the preoperative and intraoperative phases of perioperative case management. Covers the principles and techniques of hemostasis, specimen care, principles of wound healing, including selection and handling of sutures, drains, and dressings, and prevention of retained surgical items. Explores patient preparation, including positioning, transfer, and surgical site preparation.
Lab- Further develops the newly acquired cognitive, psychomotor, and affective surgical technologist skills in a real-world surgical lab setting. The use of aseptic and sterile method principles for secure patient care is emphasized. Professional conduct is required and assessed.
Prerequisite
ST 112 Surgical Technology II with a grade of C or better.
Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of hemostasis and wound healing, including the proper technique for applying surgical dressings. Demonstrate an understanding of components and aides utilized to achieve various surgical positions. Demonstrate an understanding of different types of skin prep and how they are applied to the surgical site. Demonstrate an understanding of suture materials and needle types and how they are used. Demonstrate an understanding of the types and characteristics of various catheters and drainage devices. Demonstrate an understanding of procedures for obtaining, handling, verifying, transferring, and storage of surgical specimens. Demonstrate an understanding of the purpose, legal requirements, and proper procedure for counts.
