NUR 203B Introduction to Professional Practice
The final course in the lab series. Facilitates transition into professional practice through preceptored experiences. Allows students to provide care to patients and families under the supervision of a registered nurse Clinical Teaching Associate (CTA) with guidance from program faculty. Focuses on the role of the professional nurse while increasing their responsibility and accountability in practice as members of an interdisciplinary team. Provides a variety of placement options in the acute, sub-acute, and community settings primarily located in the Linn-Benton service district.
Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
Management of Care: Demonstrate knowledge to provide and direct nursing care for 50% or more of the assigned RN team enhancing the client care delivery. Safety and Infection Control: Identify and apply safety standards for clients and healthcare personnel from health and environmental hazards. Health Promotion and Maintenance: Demonstrate knowledge to provide and direct the nursing care of clients' growth and development principles; prevention and/or early detection of health problems; and strategies to achieve optimal health. Psychosocial Integrity: Demonstrate knowledge to provide and direct nursing care that promotes and supports the emotional, mental, and social well-being of the client experiencing stressful events, as well as clients with acute or chronic mental illness. Basic Care and Comfort: Demonstrate and apply knowledge to provide comfort and assistance in client performance of activities of daily living. Pharmacological and Parenteral Therapies: Demonstrate and apply knowledge to provide care related to the administration of medications and parenteral therapies; initiate infusion therapy. Reduction of Risk Potential: Identify and apply the nursing process to reduce client complications or health problems related to existing conditions, treatments, or procedures. Physiological Adaptation: Apply the nursing process to manage and provide care for clients with acute, chronic, or life threatening physical health conditions. Professional Development: Complete a total of 180 hours of clinical time engaging in nursing care that meets standards of the Nurse Practice Act. Develop a professionally written reflection of their nursing practice.
