DA5. 453 Dental Pathology/Pharmacology
The study of oral pathology will cover the recognition of gross symptoms of oral disease, the treatment procedure and the prevention of oral disease to include the drugs and medications most commonly associated with treatment. An in-depth study of pathological diseases, normal and injured tissues, developmental anomalies, dental caries, abscesses and cysts will be discussed. Study of pharmacology with emphasis on drug regulations, prescriptions, and side effects. Topics include common dental drugs, and substance use disorders. Required: Acceptance into the Dental Assistant Program.

Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
Identify and assess abnormal tissue in the oral cavity and structures. Discuss and describe pathological diseases and developmental anomalies that may be seen in a dental office. Classify and identify medications used to treat oral health diseases. Categorize the different drug schedules based on the United States Drug Enforcement Agency. Demonstrate a foundational understanding of pharmacology as it relates to dental practice, including drug regulation, and awareness of substance misuse.
