HE 204 Exercise & Weight Management

Provides students with scientifically based strategies for controlling and managing weight. Offers students an opportunity to design and monitor participation in a personal weight management program that includes individual assessments, nutritional awareness, stress management and exercise. Since exercise is one of the most crucial factors in healthy weight management, students are encouraged to register for a physical education activity class when they register for this class.

Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
Explain the characteristics of and be able to practice successful long term weight control methods. Apply nutritional information necessary to encourage overall health and long term weight control. Assess current status of personal health and fitness goals. Develop and practice and appropriate exercise plan to reach personal goal. Read and evaluate food labels. Examine and evaluate grocery store marketing strategies and food placement. List and describe food nutrients and explain recommended daily intake. Identify risk factors associated with excess weight. Compare and contrast various weight loss plans and weight loss books. Use psychological strategies to develop and use new habits, particularly modification practices. Measure progress toward lifetime weight control. Explain the nature of eating disorders, fad foods and fad diets. Identify recommended serving sizes for commonly taken foods. Explain the effects of alcohol, sugar, oils, salt, caffeine, antioxidant and fiber on individual nutrition. Describe the physiological and psychological relationships between exercise and weight management. Comment on the complex nature of weight management and exercise adherence. Recognize complex and mixed social and cultural messages about food, weight and body size. Demonstrate the ability to be a wise consumer of weight loss gain products, concept and ideas. Prepare and deliver an effective in class presentation dealing with exercise and or weight management topic. Write and maintain an accurate food log. Prepare a computer analysis of a two or three day food log. Use a pedometer daily and record activity.
