HE 256 Foundation of Public Health
Covers the history, evolution, as well as the current status of health promotion programs and public health services in the U.S. The course will focus on the influences on health behavior, and the contexts in which population health and disease can be positively influenced by individuals, groups, and communities. Professional standards, roles and competencies, and current issues in health promotion/disease prevention practice will also be addressed.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
Describe the history and evolution of health promotion programs/public health services as well as analyze future trends and emerging challenges in health promotion.|Understand the core functions of public health practice and the major measures and influences of health status and quality of life.|Help students understand the challenges with the US health care system.|List 5 challenges faced by the US health care system.|Participate in discussion on the role, importance and effectiveness of health promotion approaches for reducing preventable mortality amd premature mortality.|Provide students with necessary tools to evaluate the US care system, e.g. compare practice settings such as schools, worksite, health care setting, community health setting in health promotion and education.|Define the core competencies of a professional health educator and the role of credentialing in professional development as well as interpret the professional code of ethics fro health educator.
