HE 261 Red Cross Adult/Infant First Aid, CPR/AED, and Emergency Response

Provides instruction in basic first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), using an automated external defibrillator (AED), and relief of foreign body airway obstruction (FBAO) for victims across the lifespan. Emphasizes early recognition of emergency medical situations and appropriate immediate care for injured or suddenly ill individuals while activating the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) system. Students learn to assess and stabilize injured or ill individuals, perform CPR, use an AED, and employ FBAO techniques in a variety of settings while responding to common medical emergencies. Instruction follows current American Red Cross guidelines, and students who successfully complete the course will earn an American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED Adult and Infant certification. May be repeated for a maximum of 2 credits.

Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
Demonstrate CPR, AED, and foreign body airway obstruction (FBAO) techniques for victims of various ages following American Red Cross guidelines. Recognize signs and symptoms of common medical emergencies, including cardiac arrest, heart attack, breathing emergencies, shock, sudden illness, and environmental emergencies (heat and cold). Demonstrate appropriate first aid care for common injuries, including bleeding, wounds, soft tissue injuries, and musculoskeletal injuries. Demonstrate proper sanitation practices to prevent transmission of communicable diseases while providing first aid or CPR. Demonstrate appropriate procedures for assessing and assisting injured individuals, including when and how to move a victim during an emergency.
