MUS 115 Aural Skills III

A course for students to continue to develop some of the most important skills a musician should have. The skills in this course will build on the skills learned in MUS 114: Aural Skills II. Students will concentrate on their abilities to hear relationships in music, notate music correctly and to audiate written notation including dictation exercises and sight-singing. This course is intended for both music and non-music major. Music majors should take this course with MUS 123.

MUS 114 Aural Skills II with a grade of C or better.

Music Majors must take MUS 123 concurrently with this course.

Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
Analyze and perform complex rhythms, including those with syncopation and tuplets, and accurately dictate simple rhythms. Recognize and sing all simple intervals, including the tritone and major/minor sevenths, in both melodic and harmonic contexts. Evaluate and identify all triad and seventh chord types (including diminished and half/fully-diminished sevenths) and resolve the dominant seventh chord. Apply advanced reading and listening skills by sight-reading in multiple keys and successfully completing diatonic melodic and harmonic dictation.
